Hm. That sounds like a whole lotta hooey. I cross the Sinai in May on a Iregular bus from Cairo, and the "tight security" consisted of illiterate security guards entering the bus, looking for foreigners (in this case, my girlfriend and I), and asking one of the other passengers what kind of passports we had. That was it. I don't ever recall the luggage compartment being insepcted.
